The major education development in Tanzania

Colonialist in Africa had various impacts on social and economic activities of the continent. There are positive and negative impacts in economic, political religious and education system. Before coming of colonialist in Africa there were education system basing on individual community needs (informal education) colonialist introduced their own education called formal education. For example German, France and Britain these countries were at longer-head for the continent conquest and had different administrative system but also different education system so confusion to Africa.

During the colonial period German strengthened its power in Tanganyika as a territory in 1885-1905. By later on they introduced their own schools for example Tanga  and Pugu. During German rule there were three education system named as (A-Quran schools, B-mission schools and C- government schools) apart from mission schools and Quran schools the government established their own schools, mission schools remained to train mission workers catechists, teachers  and plantation workers.

Quran schools existed before the coming of the German the whole country were there main content that was offering education that on Islamic values and Quran script. Muslim parents did not want their children to be mixed up in secular education
Mission schools explained early after alive of German mission in Africa started even during first half 19thc apart from spread the word of god missionaries also provided other social services like health and education to the local community members


Government school intended to train skilled workers, administrators and middle link for example railway workers boilers tureens such school that established like Tanga secondary school, Bagamoyo, Lind and Dar es salaam this enabled the native to be used by the government in an administration and this helped to increase growth of Kiswahili language which used as an instruction language
